Hand-coloring refers to any method of manually adding colour to a black-and-white photograph, generally either to heighten the realism of the photograph or for artistic purposes. Hand-coloring is also known as hand painting or overpainting.
You can use, watercolors, oils, crayons or pastels, and other paints or dyes on top of your image.
You can apply the above using brushes, fingers, cotton swabs or airbrushes. Hand colored photographs were most popular in the mid- to late-19th century before the invention of color photography and some firms specialized in producing hand colored photographs.
these images would have been done in a dark room in black and white then the color would have been added after by hand.

painting task
we went out and took photos of people(class mate).
The photo was a head to toe image though mine was only to the knee.
we then uploaded them to photoshop and turned them black+white, we then printed the images out and painted over them using real colors ie no blue faces :L
we then scanned the images back onto the computers.
my starting image.

my finished photo of lucy :D
my final image copy
I used sophie and edited the image on photoshop, I changed the balance and the vibrance of the image. I changed the image into black and white then used the burn tool to make the image darker in the corners and on the shoulder. I made a new layer and painted white on the hair then changed the layer to overlay so the white showed up on the image as highlights.
I like the image but didn't have enough time to do everything i wanted, if i did it again id make sure i had enough time to do everything and id spend longer on photoshop making sure the image was almost perfect before uploading it as a finished product. then again if i could do it again id use one of my first chosen images as i prefer them and found them more interesting.
I think it looks alot like the original image though i couldn't get the hair completely right but i think its had to notice that, I also didnt take the photo in the right angel so if i did it again id also make sure i got it right.
